Story at-a-glance +

By Dr. Mercola

As many as 8 out of 10 Americans struggle with back pain,
and many resort to surgery as a solution. Unfortunately, this often
does not resolve the problem, and in some cases simply worsens the
situation.

Dr. David Hanscom, an orthopedic surgeon with a practice in Seattle, is unusual in that he tells most of his patients they don't need surgery. He's written a book detailing his novel approach to chronic pain treatment, called “Back in Control: A spine surgeon's roadmap out of chronic pain.”

Spinal Fusions Rarely Cure Chronic Back Pain

Spinal fusions are a lucrative business and great source of revenue
for the hospital and surgeon. Unfortunately, they rarely work for the
patients. Spinal fusions arose from the assumption that disc
degeneration was a source of back pain.

Therefore, it was thought that by fusing the disc together with the
bone, which eliminates motion, you would get rid of the pain. However,
that has since been proven false.

"Disc degeneration actually does not cause back pain. That's been well-documented," Dr. Hanscom says.

"The success rate of the spinal fusion for back pain was about 24
percent, but we still kept doing it. Then, in 1994, when this paper
came out Washington showing that the return-to-work rate one year after a
spinal fusion for back pain was 15 percent, I just stopped.

Every paper since then has showed pretty much the same dismal
results; there's maybe a 20 to 25 percent success rate of spinal fusion
for back pain...

And the downside of a failed spine surgery is terrible. It's
really bad. These people are condemned to live their entire lifetime, 30
to 40 more years, in chronic pain."
Despite such findings, spinal fusions are still popular. Each year,
some 600,000 spinal fusions are performed in the U.S. with a high
percentage of them being performed for non-specific low-back pain, at a
cost of more than $600 billion.

Neurophysiological Disorder (NPD)

By 1988, Dr. Hanscom was suffering from burnout, which included 16
NPD symptoms. He did not know the nature of the problem and would be in
this state for another 15 years.

Chronic pain was one of his symptoms. He inadvertently solved his
chronic pain in 2003 and it took another few years before he understood
that he had full-blown Neurophysiologic Disorder (NPD). He began sharing
his experience with his patients in 2006.

NPD is rooted in chronic stress and anxiety. Your body becomes full
of adrenaline, and every organ system starts responding and acting up.
According to Dr. Hanscom, there are over 30 symptoms created by an
adrenalized nervous system.

"Some of my 16 symptoms included migraine headaches, ringing in
my ears, burning on my feet, itching on my scalp, migratory skin rashes,
and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

It was brutal. What I didn't realize... is that anxiety is
actually one of the classic manifestations of neurophysiological
disorder. I developed extreme anxiety. I did not become a major spine
surgeon by having anxiety; I became a major spine surgeon by suppressing
anxiety.

As you know, when we try not to think about something, we think
more, right? Interestingly, the burnout rate in medicine is about 50 to
55 percent and has a lot to do with suppressed anxiety.

Whenever I give lectures on burnout and I use the 'anxiety' word,
the whole room just goes absolutely quiet. If I hadn't gone through it
myself, I would not really be able to talk about it....

We also found out that anxiety or mental pain and physical pain
are processed in the same part of the brain. They're essentially the
same thing."

Over the following decade and a half, Dr. Hanscom struggled to
recuperate, and through a combination of pure luck and trial and error,
he eventually developed a system for treating chronic pain by addressing
not just the physical, but also the emotional/mental component of anger
and anxiety.

While there's nothing particularly new about this process, it
involves going through a sequence of strategies that allow you to calm
down and de-adrenalize your nervous system. Hundreds of patients have
now tried this system, and lead pain-free lives.

This system includes:

The Therapeutic Value of Expressive Writing

One of the strategies that had a profound impact on Dr. Hanscom's own
recovery was expressive writing — the act of writing down your negative
thoughts and emotions. Interestingly, there are over 200 research
papers published since 1982 documenting the effectiveness of expressive
writing.

“The research began with expressive writing around prior traumas
and many different formats have been studied. The most straightforward
method is ’negative writing.’

This is where you're simply writing down your current negative
thoughts – the darker, the better – and you're destroying them
instantly. You're not writing positive thoughts; you're writing down
your negative thoughts.

You are not destroying them to get rid of the thoughts. They are
permanently etched into your brain. You are allowing yourself to write
with complete freedom, so the exercise separates you from your thoughts.
Again, when you try not to think about something, you think about it
more. None of us like unpleasant thoughts, so we keep tossing them
aside. Dr. Daniel Wegner out of Harvard pointed out that by simply
writing down the thoughts you're trying to suppress, it breaks the
cycle,"
he explains.
Expressive writing exercises are now a foundational component of Dr.
Hanscom's program. By breaking up the psychological pathways of anxiety
and frustration, it allows you to reprogram your brain. Back pain is a
classic type of chronic pain that responds well to expressive writing.
An interesting study showing the emotional aspect of back pain was
published last year.

Using MRI brain imaging, they showed that while people feeling acute
back pain had an activated pain center, as you would expect, people who
have been in chronic pain for more than 10 years experience pain in the
emotional center of their brain only. The pain center was completely
dormant.

Patients in the acute pain group were then rescanned every three
months, and they found that within 12 months, if the pain still
persisted, it migrated from the pain center to the emotional center. So,
chronic pain is experienced in a completely different part of your
brain compared to acute pain.

An Extreme Success Story

Dr. Hanscom recounts one rather extreme example of how effective this
technique can really be. A gentleman broke his back in a horse riding
accident. He subsequently needed surgery on most of his thoracic spine,
which led to severe chronic pain. By the time he came to see Dr.
Hanscom, he'd been in pain for eight years. Two other surgeons had told
him he needed a fusion from his neck all the way down to his pelvis for
pain. He came to Dr. Hanscom for a third opinion.

"He had disc degeneration, but he had a straight spine. He had no
indications for a major spinal fusion surgery. I said, 'Look, I don't
think you need a surgery no matter what. There's just nothing there to
operate on. By the way, here are your writing exercises. Take a look at
the book, see what you think, and call me in a couple of weeks.' He's a
Ph.D. scientist and he thought I was just absolutely out of my mind. "

The man's girlfriend convinced him to try the writing exercises
despite his skepticism, and by the third writing exercise—about three
days later—he was 80 percent pain-free. After participating in one of
Dr. Hanscom's workshops at the Omega Institute, he became completely
pain-free, and he's now been pain-free for a year.

“He’s doing normal things now after eight years of chronic pain,
he’s even back riding his horse in the hills at a full gallop. If he’d
had those operations, he’d have a spine as stiff as a board, the chance
of getting rid of his pain is almost zero, and it would’ve been
disaster.”

Three Components to Treating Chronic Back Pain

According to Dr. Hanscom, disc degeneration is never a reason for
surgery. In his view, surgery simply isn't the right solution for back
pain or neck pain.
Sciatica and leg pain may be relieved through surgery, however. When it
comes to treating back pain, he believes there are three components to
getting better:

  1. Learning about the mechanics of chronic pain and understanding that it's a neurological disorder
  2. Treating all the variables simultaneously. This includes sleep,
stress, medication, nutrition, mental outlook on life and physical
conditioning. "There's never one answer for chronic pain. People
say, 'I tried a chiropractor, it didn't work.' Well, that could help 10
percent, but if you're not sleeping, it's not going to work. You have to
    combine modalities to get better,"
he says. "Sleep is No. 1. The entire project is null and void unless you're sleeping"
  3. Taking control of your own care. For example, for some people
chiropractic or acupuncture may be very helpful, whereas it may not work
for others. You need to take an active role in determining what's best
for you, and pursue treatments that work in your case
When seeing a new patient, for the first month or two, Dr. Hanscom
works with simple medications to address sleep problems and pain. Then
he will immediately ask you to start the expressive writing exercises,
which teache you awareness and detachment, allowing you to reprogram
your brain. Active meditation is also used.

"I simply have them put their brain on sensory input, maybe 20 to
30 times during the day. If you're anxious and frustrated, you simply
listen to your sensory input. Instead of fighting the pathways, you
place your attention elsewhere.
The second phase of the treatment is all about learning more about
chronic pain, and addressing the physical part of your pain. He also
stresses the need to work on forgiveness. Since pain pathways and anger
pathways are linked, whenever your anger pathways are fired up, your
pain pathways are going to be fired up, and vice versa. Dr. Hanscom
recommends the book, “Forgive for Good,” by Fred Luskin, the
director of the Forgiveness Projects at Stanford University, and who did
four major research projects on forgiveness.

A retired physician and professor in the Department of Rehabilitation
Medicine at NYU School of Medicine, Dr. John Sarno, was a forerunner in
the field of using forgiveness to address chronic pain, and many of
Sarno’s concepts have formed the foundation of what Dr. Hanscom now
teaches.

It's also important to realize that working on your anger and anxiety issues
may be a long-term process. An old issue may be triggered at any time,
and unless you immediately address it, your pain may come back right
along with your anger and anxiety. As noted by Dr. Hanscom:

"It can be base level stress or quirky stress. But you will get
triggered. It took me a long time to accept that fact. I teach this
stuff. But when I get triggered, I get angry about being triggered."

Surgery Is Best Reserved as a LAST Resort

In many if not most cases, pain can be resolved using very simple
strategies. The key is to find what works for you, and more often than
not, there's an emotional component that needs to be addressed. Dr.
Hanscom, like me, strongly recommends leaving surgery as a very last
resort. I also struggled with back pain for about five or six years,
despite getting regular exercise and trying a large number of different
treatments. Still, I persisted and continued to try different
strategies. The approach that finally resolved my back pain was simply
to avoid sitting! I now sit about one hour per day, and I have no back
pain.

"I can't tell you how bad the suffering is for people with failed back surgery," Dr. Hanscom says.
"I see people like you all the time, where some simple intervention
solved the problem. And then I'm watching another person come in with
five back surgeries in five years. They started out just like you. It's
hard to watch.

I'm incredibly determined to bring this right to the mainstream
public. I don't think mainstream medicine is going to buy into it, but
I'm incredibly determined to get this out into the general public
knowledge because, right now, the business in medicine is doing
procedures that don't work because they make a profit, period …[But] I'm
working very hard about creating my own gravity around the situation,
and we're making some definite progress here at the hospital. My
partners and I are looking at [pain] differently.
"

More Information

To learn more, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Dr. Hanscom’s book, “Back in Control: A Spine Surgeon's Roadmap Out of Chronic Pain.” Please
do keep in mind that while it may initially seem like there’s nothing
new here— perhaps you’re already familiar with medication and physical
therapy for example, and therefore think it simply will not work for
you— it’s the process that makes it work. And most importantly,
your willingness to truly and fully engage in the process will
determine much of your outcome. Dr. Hanscom views his book as a
framework that presents known solutions to the various aspects of pain.
Once you understand your situation in light of this structure you will
find your own solution.

“It’s a very paradoxical process. You actually can’t fix
yourself. [But] you are putting tools into place to allow your brain to
heal,”
he says ... “For instance, a lot of people have read the
book and started their writing. Nothing really happens until those
writing exercises start. Usually by the second or third … phone call
they’re sort of  doing the tools but they’re heading for the wrong
direction.”
This happens because sometimes these people are writing all day,
long, Dr. Hanscom explains, and that’s actually counterproductive
because you’re trying to capture your thoughts and “fix” them—which is
another form of trying to regain control.

“This is a process about letting go of control, not having more
control,” he says. It’s completely opposite of what we’ve been taught
about stress. That’s why I think finding a coach of some sort who can
guide you through the process is critical.I do think a psychologist can
be very helpful for guidance and wisdom ... There’s just not an exact
answer for different people. It’s more like a menu of options. But the
key is staying persistent with the process.”

I would also encourage you to sit less,
as sitting may actually be aggravating your back or neck pain. Cut it
down to about three hours a day or less if you can. Also, while it's not
a popular idea, consider being grateful that your body is wise enough
to tell you that there's something in your life that needs to be
changed, be it emotional in nature, or physical. A book that addresses
this is “Pain: The Gift Nobody Wants,” by Dr. Paul Brand. Once you pinpoint the real problem, your pain can finally be released.

    It's
true. I suffer from back and shoulder pain as a result of a posterior
laminectomy and fusion from C3-C6. A subsequent anterior discectomy and
fusion surgery from C3-C4 was needed within a year for a loose screw
    from the first surgery.

While I would love to get rid of the pain, I would do it all over
again if given the choice, and here's why. It all started with a strange
numb feeling in my right index finger that felt funny when, for
instance, I would press the buttons on a telephone or type on the
computer keyboard. Within six years, I was confined to a walker for
mobility, and my condition was worsening. I was on my way to a state of
paraplegia, when an outstanding neurologist at the V.A. diagnosed me
with Critical Spinal Stenosis. A dislocated neck that was crunching my
    spinal chord.

I had no choice but to elect for surgery. I knew what certain hell I
was headed for, and I opted to take the chance on surgery. That choice
was another form of hell of its own, but I made it through and I'm
walking on my own without any assistance.

I would like to thank the V.A. for my partial recovery, but I must
say I believe things could have gone better. I know they could have gone
worse as well, but I believe that improved V.A. funding may have helped
in better and more timely care for me as well as thousands of veterans
needing help. It's been a year and a half since my second surgery, and
I'm still waiting for an appointment to see how it went.

Surgery for spinal associated pain is a bad idea for the most part.
But in my case, I think it had to be done, despite the negative
possibilities. I took the chance so I could maybe one day return to my
career as a pilot. And don't worry. My neck injury was from a car wreck
when I was in the Air Force, not from a plane crash, as many first
assume. And I will not fly a single passenger until I feel 100% capable.
In this upcoming vote, I ask that you look to the candidates that have
the interests of veterans on their radar.

From what I understand, you, you have applied, Lumbar Laminectomy Protocol rehabilitation after operation

And as you say, you're lucky because there have been no
complications. There is always doubt, one prior therapy, but ultimately,
it is possible, that would have no choice, to go to surgery

Mayo Clinic says: The laminectomy enlarges your spinal canal to
relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. This pressure is most
commonly caused by bony overgrowths within the spinal canal, which can
occur in people who have arthritis in their spines. This pressure can
cause pain, weakness or numbness that can radiate down your arms or
legs. Laminectomy is usually better at relieving these types of
radiating symptoms than it is at relieving actual back pain.

This pressure is most commonly caused by bony overgrowths within the
spinal canal, which can occur in people who have arthritis in their
    spines.

Laminectomy is generally used only when more-conservative treatments,
physical therapy or injections, have failed to relieve symptoms.
Laminectomy may also be recommended if symptoms are severe or worsening
    dramatically

Laminectomy is generally a safe procedure. But as with any surgery,
laminectomy carries a risk of complications: bleeding Infection, blood
clots, nerve injury, spinal fluid leak

    We
keep ignoring the fact that chronic pain is most of the time caused by
chronic inflammation. My brother who was urologist developed back pain
in his late forties. As a slave to the trade he ignored my advice and
had back surgery. The pain got worse afterwards so he had another one
that put him basically where he started from. Needles to say he lived
with anti inflammatories and analgesics. He died when he was 65 years
old. So much for surgery. Movement is definitely important because we
are dynamic creatures but why is everyone avoiding to mention cellular
hydration. I found out that dehydration on cellular level is the
principal cause of inflammation and chronic pain. I am mentioning
hydration as essence of being healthy but as far as chronic pain goes
there is nothing that comes close to rectify and actually heal the body
as hydration on the cellular level. For those that did not see this
    article go to darkovelcek.wordpress.com/.../chronic-pain-relief
and definitely listen to the clip. And this is not an isolated case.
People get pain relief and heal to feel healthy and young again no
    matter what their age is.

Knowing that body does not know how to work against itself we have to
realize that there is a purpose for the pain. Pain is the last warning
of the body to pay attention and change what we are doing, or is there
to prevent us from moving during healing period. It is caused by
pressure exerted to sensory nerves. If you want to know more read this darkovelcek.wordpress.com/2015/03/20/the-pain-curse-or-a-blessing/

Pills are not the answer and surgery is straight out an assault on
the body that should never be done unless trauma is in question.
Herniated disc is not trauma and can heal with guess what? You've got
it, HYDRATION. This is not a guess work. I have helped numerous people
with this problem. Why is stress worsening the pain situation? Because
when we are in stress our cells are in the fight and flight mode and do
    not hydrate

    About
inflammation, Kefa, are you talking about autoimmune attack? If yes,
then what comes to mind for me immediately is an anti-inflammatory diet,
reducing chemical exposure as much as possible (household cleansers,
organic food, etc), heavy metal and other cleansing where indicated, and
addressing any infections (lyme, who knows what else) if these are
involved in setting off autoimmune attack. www.digitalnaturopath.com/.../C104673.html

You wrote above that the body doesn't know how to work against
itself. I love that idea,  but I do wonder about this in regard to
autoimmunity? Can you give us your perspective about this? As insightful
and deep a person as I have perceived you to be in your written posts, I
would be very interested to hear your thoughts. Many thanks! Best
    wishes ,Mirandola

PS I also found Hellerwork/Rolfing to be extremely helpful with back
pain. Not only did the myofascial release and the realignment of the
whole body help, but also the posture and movement education was simply
invaluable. But I am sure there are times when it is indicated, and
also, when it can be contraindicated. See more info here http://www.hellerwork.com         see the Client Handbook http://www.hellerwork.com   /files/6313/9173/5260/heller.handbook.pdf

    mirandola...hi
love. Autoimmune diseases do not exist. We are told that autoimmune
diseases are caused when cells attack each other causing chronic
inflammation. The bogyman is usually thyroid gland but not necessarily.
This comes from "scientific" claims that inflammation is caused by
internal war of gen and antigen. Something that cannot be proven and in
my opinion is totally of the wall.

We are told in medical schools not how to heal but only how to
suppress given symptom. This we do utilizing "medicinal remedies". What
we call medicinal I call toxic because no matter if the medicinal effect
is caused by pharmaceutical poison or toxic plant id does not help
cellular structure. It only suppresses the symptom  worsening the
situation. Since there are no diseases only different levels of toxicity
next set of symptoms will be different and it will be labeled as
different disease. Little by little the cells run out of options and
they malfunction. No further suppression bares "curing"effect so doctors
are cornered. They have to have the answer to something they do not
understand so they invented two escape goats. Autoimmune disease and
genetic problem. This way they can wash their hand of and remain smart.

I have helped numerous severely toxic and dehydrated people that had
"Lupus", at least this was di-agnosis, simply by hydrating them. Here in
Peru a lot of young people suffer from the label "leaky guts", "Krone's
disease", gastroenteritis...Those are also autoimmune diseases since
there is no doctor capable of helping them. After diet adjustment and
detox through hydration within a month or two they are all healthy so
what has happened with the autoimmunity I wander. If you want to know
more read this darkovelcek.wordpress.com/.../falling-a-part   Love and light my friend

    John
Spallino, MD, of the Laser Spine Institute in Tampa, Fla.,says
“INFLAMMATION WILL RUN RAMPANT THROUGH YOUR BODY, CAUSING ALL KINDS OF
    PROBLEMS, INCLUDING BACK PAIN."

Inflammation is actually one of your body’s defense mechanisms to
protect from infection and foreign substances. However, sometimes the
protective response becomes chronic even without infections

AN ALKALINE, ANTIOXIDANT AND MOISTURIZING DIET, WILL ALWAYS BE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

The mineral deficiency (calcium, magnesium, azufre....) and vitamins
(A,B6, B12, C,D...) and adrenal fatigue ,they are related, General pain
and stiffness; back pain; chronic fatigue, decreased sleep and increased
    irritability.

Amino acids such as PROLINE AND LYSINE ARE NEEDED TO PRODUCE COLLAGEN
and increase the strength of the intervertebral discs. Very suitable
    bone broth

Foods high in alimentos procesados, trans fats, simple sugars and
white flour actually trigger inflammation throughout our bodies through a
complex series of biochemical and hormonal processes. Left unchecked,
inflammation runs rampant through your body, causing all kinds of
problems, including arthritis and, back pain.

Oils flax, chia and olive in combination with omega 3-rich coldwater
fish your best bet to avoid inflammation. Oils include peanut, sesame,
soybean and sunflower, increase the omega-6 producing inflammatory
    cytokines.

Foods that reduce back pain and are high in nutrition, try carrots,
beets, sweet potatoes, cherries, berries, grapes and red wine,
pomegranate, avocados; nuts, kale, spinach, broccoli, such as chicken
and turkey; beans; and cocoa. Herbs and spices, including basil,
cinnamon, ginger, rosemary, garlic, te, curcumin, onions, oregano, and
    turmeric, rich in anti-inflammatory agents.

Avoid nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, eggplant, white potatoes, and peppers) as part of an anti-inflammatory diet.

Supplements: MSM, NAC, R-lipoic acid, and milk thistle

Supplementation with alkaline minerals reduces symptoms in patients with chronic low back pain.

The cause of low back pain is heterogeneous, it has been hypothesised
that a latent chronic acidosis might contribute to these symptoms. It
was tested whether a supplementation with alkaline minerals would
influence symptoms in patients with low back pain symptoms. In an open
prospective study 82 patients with chronic low back pain received daily
30 g of a lactose based alkaline multimineral supplement (Basica) over a
period of 4 weeks in addition to their usual medication. Pain symptoms
were quantified with the "Arhus low back pain rating scale" (ARS). Mean
ARS dropped highly significant by 49% from 41 to 21 points after 4 weeks
supplemention. In 76 out of 82 patients a reduction in ARS was achieved
by the supplementation. Only intracellular magnesium increased by 11%
while other intracellular minerals were not significantly changed in
sublingual tissue as measured with the EXA-test. Plasma concentrations
of potassium, calcium, iron, copper, and zinc were within the normal
range and not significantly influenced by the supplementation. Plasma
magnesium was slightly reduced after the supplemenation.

In conclusion, the results of this open study show that a disturbed
acid-base balance may contribute to the symptoms of low back pain. The
simple and safe addition of an alkaline multimineral preparate was able
to reduce the pain symptoms in these patients with chronic low back pain
    significantly

    Outcomes
of osteopathic manual treatment for chronic low back pain according to
baseline pain severity: results from the OSTEOPATHIC Trial.

RESEARCHERS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS have determined that
non-invasive osteopathic manual therapy (OMT) WILL REDUCE BACK PAIN
AVOIDING EXPENSIVE AND INVASIVE BACK SURGERY.

A total of 269 (59%) patients reported low baseline pain severity
(LBPS), whereas 186 (41%) patients reported high baseline pain severity
(HBPS).. Six OMT sessions were provided over eight weeks and outcomes
    were assessed at week 12.

The primary outcome was substantial LBP improvement with greater than 50% pain reduction.

Those with severe back pain had more than double (2,04) the chance of
significant improvement after treatment with Osteopathic Manual Therapy
than those who were treated with sham treatment, and had 80% chance of
significant improvement on the standardized Roland-Morris Disability
Questionnaire – which qualifies the mobility of the patient.

CONCLUSIONS. The large effect size for OMT in providing substantial
pain reduction in patients with chronic LBP of high severity was
associated with clinically important improvement in back-specific
functioning. Thus, OMT may be an attractive option in such patients
before proceeding to more invasive and costly treatments.

    Another
informative article Dr. As an on farm animal nutritionist I deal with
back problems in animals often. These being muscular only.  There are
two basic causes,  low dietary copper and selenium.  Low copper, due to
low copper in the diet or an iron or molybdenum excess creating the
deficiency.  Selenium deficiency means weak heart and back muscles, the
deficiency can be created with high grass protein  mainly nitrates.  On
learning of a farmers back pain and determining that it may be muscular I
suggest selenium, so far I have seen approximately 80% elimination of
back pain with some canceling surgery and specialist visits.  With
livestock I have seen severe selenium deficiency where high rates of
natural gypsum has been applied to pasture,  lambs in some cases with
weakened back muscle lost the use of their hind legs.  Supplementary
selenium solved the problem.  If you suffer from back pain first look at
your diet,  a high leafy vegetable diet may be part of your problem

causes sulfur poisoning. Selenium body uses only in very small amounts
so it is hard to believe that insufficiency of selenium will cause
health problems causing pain. Administering selenium increases the
amount in the body and since it becomes toxic it acts as medicinal
remedy. In the case of gypsum poisoning it fills receptors and replaces
sulfur this way pushing it out of the body.

As far as muscle pain in animals try to increase sea salt. Basically
mix sea salt in the water for animals to drink. It is very effective.

    I
had back pain for over 20 years; then I discovered I had a chronic
infection (Clamydia penumoniae) that was causing other problems ....
When I cured the chronic infection I noticed that the back pain  had
disappeard. To cure the infection it took a long time ... see

The back pain never came back (it is now over 6 years I don't have it any more).

    I
have found 4 good things for my back that work quickly.  Walking at a
comfortable pace for a few miles or more each day, 5 to 10 minutes on
the Chi machine, chiropractic adjustments, and a deep Swedish message
from a very good message therapist.  I am sure good diet and proper rest
helps also.  All these work synergistically to relieve my back pain.

    AY749,
See my post on this page. Perhaps the exercises in the recommended book
will enable you to eliminate all of these other things you are doing.
Perhaps you can become pain free with just a few minutes of exercise
    three times a week.

    I've
coached weight training for over 40 years and during that time have
seen many people develop lower back pain. The usual remedy was simply
hanging from a chinning bar completely relaxed, except for the grip of
course, and let the weight of the legs decompress the spine. A few years
ago I discovered a simpler way of achieving the same or better results
by simply stretching the hamstrings by trying to touch the floor without
bending the knees.Even walking or running will lead to tight hamstrings
that lead to a compressed spine. Do this stretching very slowly to
    avoid pulling a hamstring.

On a more serious note - I have lower back pain when I eat something
sweet (even sweet fruit like bananas) or too many carbs.  I get that
stiff feeling getting up in the morning or getting out of the car after a
long drive.  No problem as long as I avoid them.

    I
read somewhwre that 10 days of absolute bed rest and sleep is more
effective than surgery.Well, it sounds like a placebo would be more
effective than surgery, but there is healing potential in sleep.  Some
repair processes can only occur during sleep.  Dr. Larry Lytle's Low
Level Lasers are worth investigating for even the most severe back
problems.  (Not all lasers therapy is the same.)  This is a man you
definitely want to hear speak in person.  I can hear his same talk over
and over and learn so much new each time that I feel like I am barely
hanging on by the seat of my pants.  He is brilliant.  His promotional
literature and website do not do his products justice.

I would defintiley also consider high dose vitamin D3 therapy
balanced with vitamin K2 in MK-7 form.  Read the book:  MIRACULOUS
RESULTS OF EXTREMELY HIGH DOSES OF VITAMIN D3...-by Jeff T. Bowles.  I
have found it to be so. Also, one of the gentlest therapies is
Bioplasma, taken as directed, according to homeopathic protocol, in
combination with D3, etc.  However, it must be long term... prob 6
months or longer. Effects are slow and subtle.  I also like MSM. Find a
good physical therapist who will put you on a daily exercise regimen you
can do at home.  This should require only one or a few visits a year.
Not to max out your wallet.  The main things to target are improved
blood flow, increased flexibility and improved strength in affected
    areas.

One must be persistent and committed.  It will take work.  Bones and
muscles can take time to heal.  However, I am back to doing heavy work
after knee and spinal injuries. Anything that has been done by someone,
somewhere, before, can be studied, learned and repeated by others.
Healing is possible.  Even after being immobilized by pain. Of course,
good nutrition, esp. with good mineralization is also necessary.  Also,
check toxicity which can cause weak bones/joints by mineral
    displacement, inflam, swelling, etc.

    Pain
is in the brain. It is a red flag that you are not in emotional harmony
in your body.  When I feel the pain, it actually can leave and flow out
of the body. Medications stop the emotional energy from flowing out of
your system. If you mask the pain with toxic prescriptions of other
toxic substances as marijuana you just prolong the masked and buried
pain. You have to experience the emotions because when you run from
    them, it becomes chronic.

I became addicted to medications trying not to feel the pain. The
only way out is through. I have spent over 10 years in chronic pain that
is gradually leaving through raising my energy out of the pain, with
acupuncture, massage, chiropractic help, Chinese herbs, flower essences,
and meditation. When I feel the pain, I actually am allowing myself to
grow up and become a mature person instead of a baby that cannot face
    the issues emotionally.

    Back
troubles since age 28.  About age 55 couldn't walk more than 2 blocks,
for a year (got a bad chiropractor).  Used nutrition and at 65 could
walk 4 miles, but had to squat and stretch 10 times a mile, or so.
About 70 I got a 'vibration plate' online for under $300.  Like a paint
can mixer at the paint store, this jiggles a 200 pounder.  About 2.5-3
min. at a time, 3-4 times a week.  I keep weaving while on it, for it
will shake you into bad posture as well as good.  Now, at 75, I walk 4-6
miles without any pain, and without squat stretching.

For most low back pain, try stretching your hamstrings, daily and often, this always fixes me up.

An Inversion Table is another idea. Don't just hang upside down on it, sway up and down to pump the spinal fluid.

Both of these ideas take time so do not get discouraged if results don't happen right away.

Dr. Mercola for this article. In the video, you talked about DIY

This book contains several exercises to be done one at a time,
progressing from the easiest to the most difficult as your back pain
diminishes. I believe that anyone can do the easiest exercise. The
author documents how diagnosing back pain by looking for structural
abnormalities is extremely unreliable. He also states, based upon
published studies, that the vast majority of people with back pain have
weakness or strength imbalance in their Multifidus muscles regardless of
    any existing structural abnormalities.

I bought the book, did exactly what it said, and my back and my
sciatica went away - even though I still have all of my pre-existing
anger and anxiety issues. The book costs $13. Dinner for two at Wendy's
costs more than that. And the exercises will take, maybe, two minutes
three times a week. Can't you invest that much in a healthier back? Even
if it doesn't work for you, the cost is way less than getting involved
with some professional - and you are almost guaranteed that you will not
make your condition worse. As this article documents, that cannot be
said for professional "help" for back pain.

    Yes
a conservative approach prior to any major surgery is always indicated.
If one has back issues they should have an MRI done and study the
results carefully especially since it is written in medical jargon.
Prior to my back surgery I had major issues and no amount of shots,
proper sitting or walking could help. I had spinal stenosis and bulging
discs which were affecting my spinal cord nerves which in turn creates
back pain. A new technique used today are coflex implants which helps a
lot and is preferred above spinal fusing. I had three coflex implants
done and happy I did although you must still be careful lifting heavy
objects. One must always study all their options prior to opting for
    major surgery.

    Wandeur,
In case your back pain returns, see my post on this page for an
inexpensive recommendation. I'm glad the surgery worked for you. "One
must always study all their options prior to opting for major surgery."
The problem is that you don't know when you've studied all of the
options. I am guessing that you didn't know about the recommended book
before your operation. It may have helped and it may not have. My point
is that the book was an option that you probably didn't know about. And
your average spinal surgeon is unlikely to steer any of his patients its
    way.

Spine Surgeon Reveals Chronic Pain Treatment

Spine Surgeon Reveals Chronic Pain Treatment: Inflammation is actually one of your body’s defense mechanisms to protect from infection and foreign substances. However, sometimes the protective response becomes chronic even without infections

AN ALKALINE, ANTIOXIDANT AND MOISTURIZING DIET, WILL ALWAYS BE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

The mineral deficiency (calcium, magnesium, azufre....) and vitamins (A,B6, B12, C,D...) and adrenal fatigue ,they are related, General pain and stiffness; back pain; chronic fatigue, decreased sleep and increased irritability.

Amino acids such as PROLINE AND LYSINE ARE NEEDED TO PRODUCE COLLAGEN and increase the strength of the intervertebral discs. Very suitable bone broth

Foods high in alimentos procesados, trans fats, simple sugars and white flour actually trigger inflammation throughout our bodies through a complex series of biochemical and hormonal processes. Left unchecked, inflammation runs rampant through your body, causing all kinds of problems, including arthritis and, back pain.

Oils flax, chia and olive in combination with omega 3-rich coldwater fish your best bet to avoid inflammation. Oils include peanut, sesame, soybean and sunflower, increase the omega-6 producing inflammatory cytokines.

Foods that reduce back pain and are high in nutrition, try carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, cherries, berries, grapes and red wine, pomegranate, avocados; nuts, kale, spinach, broccoli, such as chicken and turkey; beans; and cocoa. Herbs and spices, including basil, cinnamon, ginger, rosemary, garlic, te, curcumin, onions, oregano, and turmeric, rich in anti-inflammatory agents.

Avoid nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, eggplant, white potatoes, and peppers) as part of an anti-inflammatory diet.

Moving programs after the fact is often more difficult. Some programs can be moved easily—for example, you can just move your entire Steam folder to a new drive and run the Steam.exe file to launch it. However, most programs will display errors if you attempt to drag and drop their folder to a new location. You’ll either need to uninstall and reinstall the program to the new location, or use symbolic links.

Symbolic links (or "symlinks") will allow you to move a directory while “tricking” Windows into thinking it’s at its original location.

A poem by Charlie Chaplin written on his 70th birthday on April 16, 1959.

    When I started loving myself

I understood that I’m always and at any given opportunity

in the right place at the right time.

And I understood that all that happens is right –

from then on I could be calm.

Today I know: It’s called TRUST.

When I started to love myself I understood

how much it can offend somebody

When I tried to force my desires on this person,

even though I knew the time is not right and the person

    was not ready for it,

and even though this person was me.

Today I know: It’s called LETTING GO

    When I started loving myself

I could recognize that emotional pain and grief

are just warnings for me to not live against my own truth.

Today I know: It’s called AUTHENTICALLY BEING.

    When I started loving myself

I stopped longing for another life

and could see that everything around me was a request to grow.

Today I know: It’s called MATURITY.

    When I started loving myself

I stopped depriving myself of my free time

and stopped sketching further magnificent projects for the future.

Today I only do what’s fun and joy for me,

what I love and what makes my heart laugh,

in my own way and in my tempo.

Today I know: it’s called HONESTY.

    When I started loving myself

I escaped from all what wasn’t healthy for me,

    from dishes, people, things, situations

and from everything pulling me down and away from myself.

In the beginning I called it“healthy egoism”,

    but today I know: it’s called SELF-LOVE.

    When I started loving myself

I stopped wanting to be always right

    thus I’ve been less wrong.

Today I’ve recognized: it’s called HUMBLENESS.

    When I started loving myself

I refused to live further in the past

    and worry about my future.

Now I live only at this moment where EVERYTHING takes place,

like this I live every day and I call it CONSCIOUSNESS.

    When I started loving myself

    I recognized, that my thinking

can make me miserable and sick.

When I requested for my heart forces,

my mind got an important partner.

Today I call this connection HEART WISDOM.

We do not need to fear further discussions,

conflicts and problems with ourselves and others

since even stars sometimes bang on each other

    and create new worlds.

Today I know: THIS IS LIFE!
