AMERICAN DIGEST: Comment on Small Fires In the Deep
AMERICAN DIGEST: Comment on Small Fires In the Deep: I think understanding the world more (perhaps) than our remote ancestors did in no way reduces the awe and wonder.
Our ancestors saw the Milky Way and made up stories about goddesses spilling milk. But now, try looking towards Sagittarius on a clear, moonless night and remember that each of those minute glowing dots you see is a sun perhaps greater than our own, and the haze of light is composed of such dots too shrunken by distance to see - and the light you see from that direction started on its way before the invention of agriculture, before the domestication of animals, maybe even before we learned to make fire. A thousand generations that light has been on its way, for you to see it tonight.
More wonder, not less. And then, if you can see both parts of the sky on the same night, look towards Andromeda...
The wonder of Gods ability

This week on the Accolo blog, we thought it would be nice to feature some of the most inspiring business stories that we could dig up in order to…well, inspire you guys. It’s pretty easy to lose sight of the big picture in the day-to-day of your working life and you might even have forgotten why you got into your line of work in the first place. It’s important to remember that you always have options and that there’s no reason why you can’t have the next 1 million dollar idea for your company. Just take the example ofRichard Montaez, the one time janitor at he Frito Lay factory who invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetoes and is now theexecutive vice president of multicultural sales and community activation for PepsiCo North America.

This Cinderella story of upward mobility all started back in 1976, with Montaez doing some off the clock experimentation with one of his favorite snacks: Cheetoes. Inspired by the rave reviews of his spicy Cheetoes from his friends and family,Montaez took a leap of faith and calls up the CEO of Frito Lay. Amazingly, despite the fact that he was just a janitor without a highschool education, the head honchos decided to give him a chance to pitch his product idea to upper management. After some feverish marketing research,Montaez and his wife prepared a presentation and sample bags of his spicy snacks to aid him in making the most out of his big break.
Amazingly, the idea was a wild success from the moment that he pitched it to this very day (visit any convenience store and you’ll see those Flamin’ Hot Cheetos on the shelf). As the article said, “The corporate power structure that could have ignored him or co-opted his idea instead saw his potential, mentored and promoted him. He has now met U.S. presidents and spoken at the United Nations, and he serves on several boards. And he teaches leadership to MBA students at a California university.”
If you have an idea like Richard’s, the last thing you should do is sit on it. If you show that you have potential and that you’re valuable to your employer, there’s no reason that you can’t make the same sort of transformation to your own career as Richard did to his.

Estate Freeze Strategy: Minimizing Estate & Gift Taxes - Financial Web
Estate Freeze Strategy: Minimizing Estate & Gift Taxes - Financial Web:
Estate Freeze Strategy: Minimizing Estate & Gift Taxes
Using an estate freeze strategy can help you minimize estate and gift taxes. The basic idea behind using an estate freeze strategy is to minimize estate taxes or gift taxes. If you simply give all of your estate to your beneficiaries before you die, you will most likely incur gift taxes for total amount. If you just try to pass your estate onto your beneficiaries when you die without making any preparations, your beneficiaries could have to pay estate taxes. With the estate freeze strategy, you will use a variety of tactics in order to try to eliminate the taxes that your beneficiaries will have to pay.
Stock
If you own a substantial amount of stock, you can utilize the estate freeze strategy to transfer the stock to your beneficiaries. With this method, you are going to exchange your common stock for preferred stock with the company that issued it. The company will then give shares of common stock to your beneficiaries. Since you are trading common stock for preferred stock, you will not have to pay any capital gains taxes on this exchange. The preferred stock is not going to increase in value from that point, so you will not have to worry about capital gains taxes in the future. Your beneficiaries will receive common stock and they will be able to benefit from the growth of the stock in the future.
Trust
You might also choose to set up an irrevocable trust to utilize an estate freeze strategy. With this type of trust, you will move all of your assets into the ownership of the trust. When you do this, you will not have to pay any gift taxes personally. Then, whenever you pass away, the assets inside the trust can be passed onto your beneficiaries without incurring additional taxes. Make sure that the trust is irrevocable, because assets in a revocable trust will count towards your total estate value.
Family Limited Partnership
Another tool that you can use is called a family limited partnership. You can put assets into the ownership of the partnership. You will name yourself as the general partner and your beneficiaries as limited partners. You will then be able to decrease your ownership in the partnership to 1 percent. The limited partners will then have 99 percent ownership in the partnership and all of the assets in it. Another benefit of utilizing this strategy is that the assets in the family limited partnership will not be available to creditors in the future. This will help protect your assets and it will allow you to pass them onto your beneficiaries without worrying about paying excessive estate or gift taxes.

Different Types of Gift Loans and How They Work - Financial Web
Different Types of Gift Loans and How They Work - Financial Web:
Different Types of Gift Loans and How They Work
Gift loans are defined as below-market or no-interest-rate loans made to either friends or family members. The most typical gift loans are made between parents and children. In the past, these loans were often used as an income tax strategy to reduce taxes. For example, higher-income parents would use these arrangements to shift income to their children, who often were in lower tax brackets. However, recent IRS rulings have curtailed the ability to shift income in this manner.
Types of Gift Loans
Gift loans generally fall into two categories. First, there are demand loans. As the name suggests, these loans are due at any time. In effect, a demand loan is due and payable whenever the borrower demands repayment. Therefore, a demand loan has no prearranged repayment schedule.
By contrast, the other type of gift loan does have a specific repayment schedule based on a certain period. Therefore, it is known as a term loan. A term loan is due and payable according the terms of the prearranged agreement.
How They Work
By definition, gift loans are no- or low-interest-rate loans. Therefore, the loan is not actually considered a gift. However, in the case of no-interest-rate loans, the interest is considered a gift. For low-interest loans, the difference between the prevailing market rate and what the lender actually charges is also considered a gift. As mentioned earlier, recent tax laws have limited some of the tax advantages to lenders. This was accomplished by a concept called imputed income and dollar limitations.
Tax Implications
Imputed income means that the “gift" in these types of loan arrangements can be considered taxable income at the end of year in certain instances. Although the lender does not actually receive interest payments, the amount the lender would have received is “imputed” or deemed received. For tax purposes, the borrower would also be deemed to have paid the interest. Therefore, the lender may be required to report the imputed income for tax purposes. If allowed, the borrower may also qualify for a tax deduction for the imputed income.
Gift loans for $10,000 or less are exempt from imputed income as long as the proceeds are not used for investment purposes. When gift loans are made for investment purposes, the amount of investment income the borrower has is used to determine if there will be imputed income. If the borrower has $1,000 or less in investment income and the loan amount is not more than $100,000, then there is no imputed income. If the borrower has more than $1,000 in investment income, thenthere is imputed income. However, the amount of imputed income is capped by the actual amount of the borrower’s investment income. For example, Smith makes Jones a $100,000 interest-free loan. Jones invests the $100,000 and has $1,500 in investment income. The imputed income is this situation would be $1,500. If Jones had $1,000 in investment income, the imputed income would be zero.

Inter Vivos Giving - Financial Web
Inter Vivos Giving - Financial Web:

Inter Vivos Giving
Many people simplify their estate planning by giving away portions of their property during their lifetime, which is referred to in law as inter vivos giving. The Latin term "inter vivos" means during one's lifetime. This form of giving can be a very shrewd financial move that serves a number purposes, including reducing or avoiding estate taxes, ensuring that your property goes to those that you want to receive it, and increasing your eligibility for government assistance should you become incapacitated by age or illness. Inter vivos gifts can also provide tax benefits during your lifetime.
According to the IRS, any person may give any other person a gift with a total value of up to $12,000 (as of 2006) in one year without being subject to the federal gift tax. Therefore, if you desire to distribute your estate among different individuals, a wisely planned inter vivos gift-giving strategy can actually transfer a quite substantial amount every year. For example, two parents of four children may transfer $12,000 to each of the four children each year. If all of the children are married and the respective gift is made to each child and his or her spouse, the value of the gift can reach up to $24,000, since $12,000 may be given to each individual. So, if the four children are married, the parents could transfer up to $96,000 per year in assets to their children and sons- and daughters-in-law.
As an additional example, a man who owns a house valued at $60,000 may transfer the deed to the home to his son, and then take back a mortgage on the property. In other words, he has loaned his son the money to buy the house. Now, for each of the five years following the deed transfer, he can "forgive" $12,000 owed on the mortgage. At the end of five years, the title to the house will be legally vested in the daughter, and the father will have avoided the gift tax because he actually only gave his son $12,000 per year.
Caution, however, must be exercised. In calculating federal estate taxes, the value of any nonexempt gift (an amount over and above the exemption) completed at any time during your life, minus any gift tax paid on it, must be included in the total value of your estate when you die. Therefore, if you plan to give someone a gift worth more than $12,000, it would be wise to seek the advice of a tax accountant or other professional in order to gain a clear understanding of how it could impact both your present gift-tax obligations as well as your future estate-tax bill.
In addition to the $12,000 annual exclusion for gifts, other tax exemptions may apply in certain circumstances. For example, gifts made to your spouse or a charitable organization, tuition paid directly to a student's school, or medical expenses paid directly to a patient's doctor or hospital are generally exempt from gift tax. There are, of course, some limitations. Furthermore, a gift that is considered "incomplete" under the law is not taxable. In other words, if you retain the right to have the property eventually returned to you or the right to name other people to share in the gift, the gift is not complete and therefore not subject to tax.

Falls in the Elderly Are Quite Common
Falls in the Elderly Are Quite Common:
1. Toe Taps on Cone: Place a plastic cup, opening down, on the floor between your feet. Starting with your right leg, lift your leg up to gently tap the top of the cup with your toes, then place your foot on the opposite (left) side of the cup. Lift your right foot back over the cup, and set it down on the right side. Repeat 10 times with each leg, alternating sides.
2. Seated Leg Lifts: Lift your right leg with the knee bent at 90 degrees. Hold your leg up with your foot about 6 to 10 inches off the floor for five seconds. Repeat 10 times, then switch legs and do 10 repetitions on the other side.
3. Seated March: While seated, march your legs 20 times, lifting your feet at least a few inches off the floor. Be sure to focus on maintaining good posture while marching.
4. Hand-Eye Coordination and Balance: Place a plastic cup (opening facing down) in your right hand. Stretch your arm out in front of you while balancing the cup in your open hand.
Slowly move your arm out to the side and back to center. Repeat 10 times with each arm. When you're comfortable with this exercise, you may try doing it with your eyes closed. Be sure to remain seated, and if necessary, have someone help keep you upright, and/or be ready to stabilize you if you get dizzy.
5. Seated Arm Reach: While seated, simultaneously lift your right arm up high and raise your left leg, knee bent. Hold for a few seconds, then alternate sides. Repeat for a total of 20 times.
6. Side Leg Raise: Stand behind a chair, with one or both hands on the back of the chair for support. (Alternatively, keep one or both hands on the counter). Lift your right leg out to the side. Repeat 10 times for each leg. If you're comfortable, do the exercise without holding on to the chair or counter.
7. Staggered Stance Balance: Place your right foot forward and your left foot behind, then slowly shift your balance from your front leg to your back leg. Repeat 10 times, then switch leg positions, placing your left foot forward and your right foot behind. If needed, do this exercise standing next to a chair, or between two chairs, with the backs of the chairs toward your body, so you can grab on to them for support.

Besides sysprep, there are many inexpensive, and very expensive backup applications that do "dissimilar hardware restore" . Examples include EMC/Dantz Retrospect ( semi-cheap ), Symantec Backup Exec ( expensive ) or Arcserve ( so expensive that you'd need to be able to crap golden nuggets ). In any case, one can always go to the device manager and change all the device drivers which are system specific and update them to the generic Microsoft equivalents that correspond to the hardware on the new system. I've used this method for years without any problems. See, eg., here : http://reboot.pro/topic/15901-migrate-win7-between-pcs-without-migration-tools/9

Good thing I didn't read this article last week when I used a common freeware partition tool's copy disk wizard to setup three computers (hp desktop, toshiba laptop and a dell 2-1) with new ssd's....I've even swapped them out putting the dell Ssd into the toshiba so far all copies of Windows are still activated and I haven't had to call MS. Maybe I'm a wizard, my money is on lucky idiot though.

Quite misleading article. I have cloned many system hard disk drives and installed them in newly assembled pc's with completely different hardware configurations, and every time it has worked like a charm. There is even no need to go into Device Manager to update anything initially, because when you boot for the first time, Windows detects the new hardware and automatically installs all the necessary drivers without asking you a single question. These are usually generic drivers, but usually most of the functions work at first go. The most common problem faced at this stage is the sound card, which normally requires new drivers to work. Next step is to simply insert your motherboard CD into the CD drive and go through the installation procedure for all the hardware peripherals of your new hardware. I have done this umpteen number of times without any problems at all. The software I commonly use for cloning is Acronis Trueimage Home, Minitools Partition Wizard or Easeus Partition Master free, all excellent software.

Member of Congress 1827-31, 1832-35
One day in the House of Representatives, a bill was taken up appropriating money for the benefit of a widow of a distinguished naval officer. Several beautiful speeches had been made in it's support. The Speaker was just about to put the question when Crockett arose:
"Mr. Speaker-- I have as much respect for the memory of the deceased, and as much sympathy for the suffering of the living, if suffering there be, as any man in this House, but we must not permit our respect for the dead or our sympathy for a part of the living to lead us into an act of injustice to the balance of the living. I will not go into an argument to prove that Congress has no power to appropriate this money as an act of charity. Every member upon this floor knows it. We have the right, as individuals, to give away as much of our own money as we please in charity; but as members of Congress we have no right so to appropriate a dollar of the public money. Some eloquent appeals have been made to us upon the ground that it is debt due the deceased. Mr. Speaker, the deceased lived long after the close of the war; he was in office to the day of his death, and I have never heard that the government was in arrears to him. Every man in this House knows it is not a debt. We cannot, without the grossest corruption, appropriate this money as the payment of a debt. We have not the semblence of authority to appropriate it as a charity. Mr. Speaker, I have said we have the right to give as much money of our own as we please. I am the poorest man on this floor. I cannot vote for this bill, but I will give one week's pay to the object, and if every member of Congress will do the same, it will amount to more than the bill asks."
He took his seat. Nobody replied. The bill was put upon its passage, and, instead of passing unanimously, as was generally supposed, and as, no doubt it would, but for that speech, it received but few votes, and, of course, was lost.
Later, when asked by a friend why he had opposed the appropriation, Crockett gave this explanation:
"Several years ago I was one evening standing on the steps of the Capitol with some other members of Congress, when our attention was attracted by a great light over in Georgetown. It was evidently a large fire. We jumped into a hack and drove over as fast as we could. In spite of all that could be done, many houses were burned and many families made homeless, and besides, some of them had lost all but the clothes they had on. The weather was very cold, and when I saw so many women and children suffering, I felt that something ought to be done for them. The next morning a bill was introduced appropriating $20,000 for their relief. We put aside all other business and rushed it through as soon as it could be done.

"The next summer, when it began to be time to think about the election, I concluded I would take a scout around among the boys of my district. I had no opposition there, but, as the election was some time off, I did not know what might turn up. When riding one day in a part of my district in which I was more of stranger than any other, I saw a man in a field plowing and coming toward the road. I gauged my gait so that we should meet as he came to the fence. As he came up, I spoke to the man. He replied politely, but, as I thought, rather coldly.
"I began: "Well, friend, I am one of those unfortunate beings called candidates, and----'
"Yes, I know you you are Colonel Crockett. I have seen you once before, and voted for you the last time you were elected. I suppose you are out electioneering now, but you had better not waste your time or mine. I shall not vote for you again.'
"Yes, I know you you are Colonel Crockett. I have seen you once before, and voted for you the last time you were elected. I suppose you are out electioneering now, but you had better not waste your time or mine. I shall not vote for you again.'
"This was a sockdolager....I begged him to tell me what was the matter.
"Well, Colonel, it is hardly worth-while to waste time or words upon it. I do not see how it can be mended, but you gave a vote last winter which shows that either you have not capacity to understand the Constitution, or that you are wanting in honesty and firmness to be guided by it. In either case you are not the man to represent me. But I beg your pardon for expressing it in that way. I did not intend to avail myself of the privilege of the constituent to speak plainly to a candidate for the purpose of insulting or wounding you. I intended by it only to say that your understanding of the Constitution is very different from mine; and I will say to you what, but for rudeness, I should not have said, that I believe you to be honest.... But an understanding of the Constitution different from mine I cannot overlook, because the Constitution, to be worth anything, must be held sacred, and rigidly observed in all its provisions. The man who wields power and misinterprets it is the more dangerous the more honest he is.'
"'I admit the truth of all you say, but there must be some mistake about it, For I do not remember that I gave any vote last winter upon any constitutional question.'
"'No, Colonel, there's no mistake. Though I live here in the back woods and seldom go from home, I take the papers from Washington and read very carefully all the proceedings in Congress. My papers say last winter you voted for a bill to appropriate $20,000 to some suffers by fire in Georgetown. Is that true?'
"'Well, my friend, I may as well own up. You have got me there. But certainly nobody will complain that a great and rich country like ours should give the insignificant sum of $20,000 to relieve it's suffering women and children, particularly with a full and overflowing Treasury, and I am sure, if you had been there, you would have done just as I did.'
"'It is not the amount, Colonel, that I complain of; it is the principle. In the first place, the government ought to have in the Treasury no more than enough for its legitimate purposes. But that has nothing to do with the question. The power of collecting and disbursing money at pleasure is the most dangerous power that can be intrusted to man, particularly under our system of collecting revenue by tariff, which reaches every man in the country, no matter how poor he may be, and the poorer he is the more he pays in proportion to his means. What is worse, it presses upon him without his knowledge where the weight centers, for there is not a man in the United States who can ever guess how much he pays to the government. So you see, that while you are contributing to relieve one, you are drawing it from thousands who are even worse off than he. If you had the right to give anything, the amount was simply a matter of discretion with you, and you had as much right to give $20,000,000 as $20,000. If you have the right to give to one, you have the right to give to all; and, as the Constitution neither defines charity nor stipulates the amount, you are at liberty to give to anything and everything which you may believe, or profess to believe, is a charity, and to any amount you may think proper. You will very easily perceive what a wide door this would open for fraud and corruption and favortism, on the one hand, and for robbing the people on the other. No, Colonel, Congress has no right to give charity. Individual members may give as much of their own money as they please, but they have no right to touch a dollar of the public money for that purpose. If twice as many houses had been burned in this county as in Georgetown, neither you nor any other member of Congress would have thought of appropriating a dollar for our relief.
There are about two hundred and forty members of Congress. If they had shown their sympathy for the suffers by contributing each one week's pay, it would have made over $13,000. There are plenty of men in and around Washington who could have given $20,000 without depriving themselves of even a luxury of life.. The congressmen chose to keep their own money, which, if reports be true, some of them spend not very creditable; and the people about Washington, no doubt, applauded you for relieving them from the necessity of giving by giving what was not yours to give. The people have delegated to Congress, by the Constitution, the power to do certain things. To do these, it is authorized to collect and pay moneys, and for nothing else. Everything beyond this is usurpation, and a violation of the Constitution.
"'So you see, Colonel, you have violated the Constitution in what I consider a vital point. It is a precedent fraught with danger to the country, for when Congress once begins to stretch it's power beyond the limits of the Constitution, there is no limit to it, and no security for the people. I have no doubt you acted honestly, but that does not make it any better, except as far as you are personally concerned, and you see that I cannot vote for you...'
"I tell you I felt streaked. I saw if I should have opposition, and this man should go talking, he would set others to talking, and in that district I was a gone fawn-skin. I could not answer him, for the fact is, I was so fully convinced that he was right, I did not want to. But I must satisfy him, and I said to him:
"Well, my friend, you hit the nail upon the head, when you said I had not sense enough to understand the Constitution. I intended to be guided by it, and thought I had studied it fully, I have heard many speeches in congress about the powers of the Congress, but what you have said here at your plow has got more hard, sound sense in it than all the fine speeches I ever heard. If I had ever taken the view of it that you have, I would have put my head into the fire before I would have given that vote; and if you will forgive me and vote for me again, if I ever vote for another unconstitutional law I wish I may be shot.'
"He laughingly replied: "Yes Colonel, you have sworn to that once before, but I will trust you again upon one condition. You say that you are convinced that your vote was wrong. Your acknowledgment of it will do more good than beating you for it. If, as you go around the district, you will tell people about this vote, and that you are satisfied it was wrong, I will not only vote for you, but will do what I can to keep down opposition, and perhaps, I may exert some little influence in that way.'
"'If I don't,' said I. "I wish I may be shot; and to convince you that I am in earnest in what I say I will come back this way in a week or ten days, and if you will get up a gathering of the people, I will make a speech to them. Get up a barbecue, and I will pay for it.'
"'No Colonel, we are not rich people in this section, but we have plenty of provisions to contribute for a barbecue, and some to spare for those who have none.. The push of crops will be over in a few days, and we can then afford a day for a barbecue. This is Thursday; I will see to getting up on Saturday week. Come to my house on Friday, and we will go together, and I promise you a very respectable crowd to see and hear you.'
"'Well, I will be here. But one thing more before I say good-by. I must know your name.'
"'My name is Bunce.'
"'Not Horatio Bunce?'
"'Yes.'
"'Well, Mr. Bunce, I never saw you before though you say you have seen me, but I know you very well. I am glad I have met you, and very proud that I may hope to have you for my friend.'
"It was one of the luckiest hits of my life that I met him. He mingled but little with the public, but was widely known for a heart brimful and running over with kindness and benevolence, which showed themselves not only in words but in acts. He was the oracle of the whole country around him, and his fame had extended far beyond the circle of his immediate acquaintance. Though I had never met him before, I had heard much of him, and but for this meeting it is very likely I should have had opposition, and had been beaten. One thing is very certain, no man could now stand up in that district under such a vote.
"At the appointed time I was at his house, having told our conversation to every crowd I had met, and to every man I stayed all night with, and I found that it gave the people an interest and a confidence in me stronger than I had ever seen manifested before.
"Though I was considerably fatigued when I reached his house, and, under ordinary circumstances, should have gone early to bed, I kept up until midnight, talking about the principles and affairs of government and got more real, true knowledge of them than I had got all my life before.
"I have known and seen much of him since, for I respect him --- no, that is not the word -- I reverence and love him more than any living man, and I go to see him two or three times a year; and I will tell you sir, if everyone who professes to be a Christian, lived and acted and enjoyed it as he does, the religion of Christ would take the world by storm.
"But to return to my story. The next morning we went to the barbecue, and, to my surprise, found about a thousand men there. I met a good many whom I had not known before, and they and my friend introduced me around until I had got pretty well acquainted---at least, they all knew me.
"In due time notice was given that I would speak to them. They gathered up around a stand that had been erected. I opened my speech by saying: "Fellow-citizens --- I present myself before you today feeling like a new man. My eyes have lately been opened to truths which ignorance or prejudice, or both, had heretofore hidden from my view. I feel that I can today offer you the ability to render you more valuable service than I have ever been able to render before. I am here today more for the purpose of acknowledging my error than to seek your votes. That I should make this acknowledgement is due to myself as well as to you. Whether you will vote for me is a matter for your consideration only.'
"I went on to tell them about the fire and my vote for the appropriation and then told them why I was satisfied it was wrong. I closed by saying:
"And now, fellow-citizens, it remains only for me to tell you that the most of the speech you have listened to with so much interest was simply a repetition of the arguments by which your neighbor, Mr. Bunce, convinced me of my error.
"'It is the best speech I ever made in my life, but he is entitled to the credit for it. And now I hope he is satisfied with his convert and that he will get up here and tell you so.'
"He came upon the stand and said:
"'Fellow-citizens --- It affords me great pleasure to comply with the request of Colonel Crockett. I have always considered him a thoroughly honest man, and I am satisfied that he will faithfully perform all that he has promised you today.'
"He went down, and there went up from that crowd such a shout for Davy Crockett as his name never called forth before.
"I am not much given to tears, but I was taken with a choking then and felt some big drops rolling down my cheeks. And I tell you now that the remembrance of those few words spoken by such a man, and the honest, hearty shout they produced, is worth more to me than all the reputation I have ever made, or shall ever make, as a member of Congress.
"Now, sir," concluded Crockett, "you know why I made that speech yesterday.
"There is one thing now to which I will call your attention. You remember that I proposed to give a week's pay. There are in that House many very wealthy men-- men who think nothing of spending a week's pay, or a dozen of them, for a dinner or a wine party when they have something to accomplish by it. Some of those same men made beautiful speeches upon the great debt of gratitude which the country owed the deceased -- a debt which could not be paid by money --- and the insignificant and worthlessness of money, particularly so insignificant a sum as $10,000, when weighed against the honor of the nation. Yet not one of them responded to my proposition. Money with them is nothing but trash when it is to come out of the people. But it is the one great thing for which most of them are striving, and many of them sacrifice honor, integrity, and justice to obtain it."

OPEC ‘very close’ to agreement to stabilize market, Venezuelan president says
By NORIS SOTO, ANDREW ROSATI on 9/19/2016
PORLAMAR, Venezuela (Bloomberg) -- OPEC members are close to reaching an agreement on how to stabilize the market, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said after speaking to his counterparts from Iran and Ecuador.
Maduro held “positive discussions” with fellow members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries who attended the Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, he said Sunday at a press conference following the event, in which 15 heads of state gathered in the South American country. Maduro said he spoke with Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani at the summit and that he hopes an accord can be reached by the end of the month.
“We are close to an agreement between OPEC and non-OPEC countries to stabilize themarket,” state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA wrote on Twitter, citing Maduro. A “definitive answer” for market stability could come this month, he said, according to PDVSA.
Ministers from all 14 member nations of OPEC, as well as the energy minister of Russia plan to have informal discussions about the oil market in Algiers on Sept. 27 on the sidelines of the International Energy Forum.
News of the meeting has fanned speculation that producers may agree on an output cap to shore up prices that are languishing below $50/bbl nearly two years into the largest marketcrash in a generation. If the ministers reach a consensus in Algeria, OPEC may call a special meeting, Secretary General Mohammed Barkindo said on Sunday, according to Algeria’s official news agency.
Brent crude, the global benchmark, was up 1.8% at $46.57/bbl as of 11:22 a.m. Singapore time.

LONDON -- McKinsey Energy Insights (MEI), a data and analytics specialist, forecasts that it will take more than six months for the oil markets to fully rebalance.
In its latest research, MEI suggests that the pace and timing of an oil price recovery depends on four key drivers in the short-term: GDP growth, decline in producing fields, slowdown in U.S. light tight oil (LTO) production and OPEC Gulf state behavior, in particular, Iran and Saudi Arabia.
MEI modeled four scenarios—fast recovery, slow recovery, under-investment and supply abundance—and the latest trends point towards a slow market recovery scenario. In this case, the market will take another six months for oversupply to disappear and another 6-12 months to burn excess inventories. In the long term, continuous cost compression efforts could reduce average marginal costs to $65-75/bbl, driven by deepwater and LTO plays.
James Eddy, head of MEI, said, “The market is recovering, but this may be slower than previously expected. We expect demand growth to decelerate as a result of slowing economic development and structural shifts in the transport sector.
“On the supply side, in addition to OPEC Gulf crude production, we see unconventionals and offshore resources playing an important role in replacing the 34 MMbpd decline in conventional basins through 2030.”
The research also notes that there is a key short-term risk that OPEC Gulf members have the capacity to add more than 3-4 MMbpd incremental production by 2019. This could potentially stifle oil prices further into 2018-19.
Stacked oil and gas make Permian deals costly in spite of rout
Stacked oil and gas make Permian deals costly in spite of rout
Stacked oil and gas make Permian deals costly in spite of rout
By MATTHEW MONKS on 9/19/2016
NEW YORK (Bloomberg) -- Oil prices are depressed, but Texas shale has never been more valuable.
A recent spate of land deals in the sprawling Permian basin illustrates a counter-intuitive trend: Real estate in the country’s most active oil field is even more expensive today than it was before commodity prices crashed.
QEP Resources Inc. agreed to pay a price that works out to close to $60,000 per net acre in June for a slice of the Permian, in the basin’s priciest land deal on record.
That’s more than double the average $30,000 per net acre explorers paid for Permian land during the first nine months of 2014, when oil topped $100/bbl, according to data from Citigroup Inc. Oil has been hovering at $45 to $50/bbl since mid-August.
Over the past few months, at least four other explorers agreed to pay more than $30,000 per net acre to expand in the Permian: Concho Resources Inc., Parsley Energy Inc., SM Energy Co., and Silver Run Acquisition Corp., according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
“The valuations are pretty lofty,” said Bryan Lastrapes, managing director at Moelis & Co. “When you look at the prices being paid for a flowing barrel, they are higher than when oil was at $100.”
Unusual geography
The obvious question: With oil so much cheaper today, why has Permian land become so pricey? There are a few explanations. The first comes down to the same reason a dingy is more valuable on a sinking ship.
“It’s about scarcity,” said Bruce Cox, global head of energy acquisitions and divestitures with Credit Suisse Group AG.
The Permian is one of the few places in the U.S. where drilling remains profitable amid low prices, thanks to its unusual geography, in which different layers of oil- and gas-soaked rock are stacked like layers in a cake, he said. An explorer can drill multiple horizontal wells after digging straight down.
“What you can’t find in most plays is the Permian hydrocarbon column,” Cox said. “Companies can drill two to four times as many wells over a 10-year development period” in the Permian than in other basins.
QEP rationale
This is a key part of the rationale QEP used to justify the price it agreed to pay for the 9,400 net acres in the Permian in June.
The company told investors it sees a chance to drill more than 400 horizontal wells along four different benches of shale, more than a half-mile down, where it has already determined there is oil. It sees additional upside potential drilling riskier, wildcat wells on three other benches. So it isn’t buying just one field, but as many as seven.
That deal also addresses a perpetual critique from investors that QEP isn’t big enough in the Permian, by increasing its position there by 50%, Richard Doleshek, QEP’s CFO, said in August.
“From a dollar-per-acre standpoint, we heard a lot of conversation about how that was a big number,” Doleshek said during a presentation at an oil and gas conference sponsored by Enercom Inc., according to a transcript compiled by Bloomberg.
“When you look at it on a target basis, it’s relatively reasonable,” he said. “It’s pristine acreage.”
Lower costs
Another factor driving up Permian land prices is the fact that it has some of the lowest break-even costs in the world. The area has more than a half-dozen fields where drilling can stay profitable even when oil falls below $30/bbl, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The oil rout has set off a land grab for that reason, said Ron Gajdica, co-head of energy acquisitions and divestitures with Citigroup.
“When oil prices were high, there was a high supply of acreage with economic drilling opportunities,” he said. “Now, in a $40 to $50 oil price environment, acreage with economic locations is scarcer. There are only a limited amount of opportunities and many of them are in the Permian.”
A couple of other things are driving up the price of Permian land. First, development costs have come down sharply during the downturn, thanks to lower service costs, technological advances and more efficient techniques, Gajdica said. That means explorers can justify paying higher prices for land.
Second, Wall Street is helping the trend. Publicly traded Permian explorers such as Concho and Parsley trade at a premium to other shale players. They paid for their recent acquisitions with stock. Since their currency is worth more, they can afford to pay up.
In addition, other explorers with operations elsewhere, such as QEP and SM, saw their share prices spike after striking deals in the Permian, which could spur even more deal-making in the area.
“The market tends to respond favorably when these Permian deals are announced,” Gajdica said.
